Breaking the Cycle…

We have been talking about the word Optimism this month.

The basic understanding or definition is a look on the brighter side of things.

One of the most important discussions this past week was about the topic of “Breaking Cycles”.

We all get caught in “Cycles”. It is like Bruce Lee used to talk about when he said we should breaking up patterns and forms. To look beyond the steps…

Well we are all creatures of habit and those habits make us comfortable.

Lets think about it in a self-defense concept for a second… we wake up and do the same thing every day. We leave home and work around the same times. Honestly… if someone watched us long enough they could put together an easy way to attack us because of our patterns.

Now lets think about it in a relationship concept… we come home, turn on the TV and watch what ever show is on or that we taped. We spend more time with our significant others watching TV than actually spending quality time together. Talking, working out together… or other things 🙂 After a while we are bored and stuck in a “cycle” that is not healthy for our relationship. The same goes for bringing home work 😦

Last but not least… lets talk about a health concept… we plan to eat healthy. Somewhere along the lines we run out of time and don’t prepare. We are stuck out somewhere without our healthy snacks and end up having to pick something up. The worst is getting out late from our jobs and just hitting the drive thru. All with the hopes of that tomorrow “I will do better”.

Unfortunately it takes more than that to make it happen.

I bring up these three because I have found myself in each of these situations before and know what it feels like 😦

After a while I remember even feeling lost… like I could not break this pattern. I couldn’t fly above the dark cloud.

This is what I call a VC situation or victim of circumstance.

If we allow other things to control our lives then we never actually live.

I want you to know that there is a bright light above those clouds.

It is warm… and it feels good.

I want you to climb high and be there with me.

Reach for the stars….

It won’t be easy…

But you will enjoy the feeling when you are there…

I promise.

Habits we Train are Habits we Gain….

It has been expressed for a long time that it really does take 21 Days to create a habit.

As one of my motivational coaches once told me… “the habits you train are the habits you gain”.

If you wish to be a fighter you need time. Time in… training… drilling certain things over and over and over again. Nothing fantastic or special… just over and over and over again.

My grappling coach, Marc Ritacco is great about always expressing this. “There is nothing that will speed up your progression.” You have to put in the time.

This is the same for my other instructor Guro Ron Balicki. He always says, “everyone wants everything fast… fast internet, fast food, fast martial arts!!!” They want to move to the next thing without putting in the time to digest the technique or drill they just learned.

The same is for our eating and health.

We don’t get out of shape over night. It takes time…. and in my experience it will probably take three times the amount of time to get back to where we were.

But it all starts with the first day…. and then the next.

It takes one step towards being healthy.

Then it takes the big “C” word…. “Consistency”.

To do something over and over again… just like the fighters.

To set your plan, prepare and then hit it with precision is the key.

“You got to plan your work and work your plan!!!”

Take at least 21 days and challenge yourself to form new habits.

The Four Legs We Stand On…

In order for us to work towards being Superman or at least Super Human we need several things. Specifically we need Four Legs. These legs are the most important part of getting the most out of ourselves and our days.

They are simple…

1. Activity
2. Nutrition
3. Hydration
4. Rest

We need Activity to help keep us young. To give us the blood flow and energy to keep up. Those that are parents know what I mean. If you are not in decent shape, it will be hard to keep up with your children. They will wear you out!!! 🙂

In order to drive strong during our Actions we need fuel. With the proper Nutrition we can do just about anything. Think about the times that you feel really sluggish after a meal. Remember how your energy level felt… what energy???!!!! LOL. I think of this leg and a saying always comes to mind… “you are what you eat!!!”. We are like race cars. We need high octane foods and supplementation to help get the most out of what we consume.

Beyond this we need Hydration. Those days of head aches, muscle aches and fatigue are often lead to bad Nutrition and/or Hydration. Think about how the next day of a bender out on the town feels. You are a zombie that day and as you get older you are probably a zombie for the rest of the week!!! Talk about a low point on the productivity meter!!!

Last but not least… we need Rest!!! Without it we can’t recover. Whether it is a tough day at the office or a hard training session at the gym…. we need sleep. I personally am not the best at this one. I burn the candle at least at two ends as my dad always told me. But think about it… how did you feel on days where you got plenty of Rest??? How did you feel on days that you didn’t??? It is the key to repair… physically, mentally and spiritually.

A healthy life style takes Three P’s to make it happen.

Planning
Preparation
Precision

You must Plan your schedule and your day so that you get the most out of it. “Plan your work and work your Plan”!!!

You must Prepare the things you need ahead of time so that you are not without. For instance having multiple water bottles with you and snacks every where you go. This way you always have Nutrition and Hydration. Prep your meals and be ready to go for an action packed day!!!

Precision…. well need I really say more. If you don’t hit the bulls eye on your Planning and Preparation… well then all that was for nothing 😦

The weekend is almost here and will you be ready for Monday morning with a Plan. Will you be Prepared to make a change in your life. Choose to Change and hit the target Precisely.

It isn’t easy and all the knowledge you can get will help.

“After just 45 minutes in MMA Conditioning…”

” After just 45 minutes in MMA Conditioning class with Guro Larry I was breathing harder and sweating more then when I did running the Capital 10k!  That says a lot because running 6 miles is no walk in the park.  I had to work hard to get through the last 2 miles, but at the end compared to MMA Conditioning it looked like I had simply taken a short walk around the block. There is nothing like it for working up a good sweat and punching out a rough days aggression! “IF you could live the life of any fictional character, which character would you be???”

I love this question. It brings a whole different kind of thought pattern to who and what we are. Even more importantly who and what we want(ed) to be.

I remember a friend of mine once giving me some great insight on my life at the time.

He said you are about to go through a serious change. You will know who you are… You will remember who you were… and you will remember who you wanted to be.

I took those words of wisdom in and man was he right.

Self-reflection is a big thing that we should all do every day.

Look back across the day at our failures and our triumphs and plan on how we will be even better tomorrow.

So, figure out who you wanted to be and see if it is still in the plan. If you want it… it is never too late. Make the choice and decision to start down that path.

The time is now to be the doctor, dive master or super hero you always wanted to be.

Live the dream… be your dream!!!

Setting Goals…. like 10,000 Core Exercises in ONE MONTH!!!

I have spoken to so many people about what it takes to set and achieve goals. Honestly though, writing down the goal, setting a deadline, making a plan and telling everyone about is still missing something. You still need what I call the “Big C”.

You have to be “Consistent”.

You have to keep chiseling away at your clay to make it to your goal.

Last month was a roller coaster for me and I found myself a week and a half away from my deadline. I found myself needing 6000 leg presses. WOW!!!

Most would have given up; but I knew that I had to pay the price for not being Consistent.

If I could have done a few more each day then I would have been able to finish a lot easier.

But the drive to finish for myself and everyone that was following me was most important to me. What was most important was to set an example and let everyone see me finish. To give everyone hope that they can achieve their goals and dreams.

Those close to me knew I was down to 2000 left at 11pm on the 28th…. but I kept pushing…. I finished!!!

After taking a day or two to recover and reflecting back, I realize that I had lots of speed bumps to slow me down this month.

I needed a better plan to make this goal happen. I needed to keep calculating my numbers each night to see where I was at and what I needed to do the next day.

Being consistent in the gym, at home and in life is really what matters.

This time around, I want to help those out there with some great exercises and options for core training. I also thought if I have to post exercises I am doing throughout the month, then we could all stay fired up and consistent.

Attached here are my favorite set of crunches. Before this set I just had a strong core and rock hard abs. I had a line down my mid section but I did not have any other tone. I couldn’t figure out why… until I got to this set. I have been using this set since High School and have stuck with it. The benefits actually out weight the looks. I truly believe my strikes and other actions are 10x stronger because of this set.

I want to encourage you to do this set three days in a row starting at 15 reps each. After the first three days, you should move up to 16 reps and so forth.

Start with the basic hand position and to the next level of difficulty as you feel stronger.

Enjoy this set because it will bring you many rewards in the future.

“The “D Cubed” is what I call…”

The “D Cubed” is what I call “Desire, Drive & Dedication”

Often enough through life we all have things we would like to achieve.  Wanting something is really only a small part of it though.  Wanting a new car or even wash board abs can be there but you really must DESIRE it.

Advocare used to have a saying that talked about people finally wanting to make a change.  They must choose to change.  Often enough before making this choice, their “root of disgust” with their situation has to be so great that it creates a spark.  This creates a flame which cannot be put out.  Something that will drive them to their goal and beyond.  This is true Desire.

You must take Desire and let it be the fuel for what gives your car the DRIVE to move forward.  The Drive is the planning stage of your “D Cubed”.  What is each step that will play an important roll to get you what you Desire?  Is your Desire losing weight, having more confidence, earning your black belt or even becoming world champ???  What is your plan for getting there.  We can all go to Houston, but our route might be different from each other.

Once the car is fueled up and we have directions to where we are going, it is time to put in the time.  There is no replacement for DEDICATION.  Some people are born with superior skills or talents, but Commitment is not based on these.  Commitment is based on your Dedication to get what you Desire. How committed are you to your Goals???

This Dedication is you rolling out of bed even when you are tired, sore and even depressed.  IT is what makes you choose the right foods, hydration, rest and activity to help you Drive towards your Desire.  It is the thing that reminds you of your choices and keeps you in check through the daily grind.

Try applying this to your next goal.  

See what you can accomplish if you have all three “D’s”.

If you are finding yourself moving away from what you Desire… then re-evaluate your “D Cubed” and see what is missing.  Chances are one of the “D’s” is missing.

“IF you could change the ending to one movie you have seen, which one would it be, and how would you re-shoot it?”

As I read this I remember all the years that my mom and I owned and ran a video store. It was a great time of my life. I got to really become a people person as well as meet my first Martial Arts Instructors.

It is funny to think that was 25 years ago… wow!!!

As I thought about those days…. I remembered watching movies and wishing I could be the hero or the funny guy or the guy that gets the girl, etc., etc.

After a while… I realized I can be all of those and more.

Just as my mother taught me… I can get and be anything I want…. all I have to do is DO IT!!!

So as you think of this quote from a new book I have been reading…. think if you could change the ending of your life… what would you do… who would you be… how DO you plan to shoot your movie.
