Courage – Part Five

How do you stay calm?  I mean it is one thing to stay calm in a heated situation that maybe upsets you.  It is another thing to stay calm in situations that could cause you or someone you love harm.  Or wait… are they potentially the same thing??  Well they can be.  Essentially both are a confrontation of some sort.  The end result could be different but initially when we break down the general concept… it is a confrontation.  A situation where you must face your fears.

You might have heard of the term “non-confrontational”?  Well that is the current world we live in.

Our world is leaving us a Legacy of Technology.  People think that texting, face booking, emailing, etc. are the only ways to communicate.  I mean why do it in person or even over the phone when you can hide behind a key board.  This reminds me of the scene in Jerry McGuire when he got Bob Sugar-ed or fired in a restaurant.  A public place so he wouldn’t make a scene.

Honestly, most people would rather be non-confrontation.  Instead, they are completely happy judging instead of actually facing someone in person and talking with them.  Notice I said with them and not to them.  You can’t go into the conversation and think that you are going to change the way someone thinks or feels.  If so, often enough the conversation will be a waste of time.  However, if you give yourself a moment and collect your thoughts you can share them.  Then you can also listen.  You might remember my comments on that in my last blog.  The concept here is that we can just talk.  We can communicate about something and not have to be right or prove a point.  Just absorb the information by taking ourselves out of the equation.  Wow!!!  If we could do this as a civilization that would be an amazing thing.

“Clear thinking requires courage rather than intelligence.” said Thomas S. Szasz.

Courage – Part Four

It is funny how often enough success leaves clues.

That is one of the first sayings that I learned from Fred Degerberg.  I sat across from him many years ago when I only had about 14 students.  I told him all the reasons why I didn’t have students and he re-told them to me like this… “that is all your fault”.

He was right… and thankfully during one part of the conversation he told me to “shut up and listen”.  Well he didn’t say it that nice but you get the idea 🙂

He made me sit there and get the absolute worse verbal beat down of my life.

I left crushed and humiliated.  It wasn’t just me in the room but several others including my instructor Guro Ron Balicki who set up the meeting for me.

I went home with all these ideas but I needed to see past the things to do and look for the message he was trying to deliver.  As he said… “It isn’t any one thing”.  I know, I know… just like the movie City Slickers… but it is true!!!

After all the years I love telling people about that meeting and what it did for me.  It’s taken me years to even understand all of what we discussed in just a few hours.  But you have to understand… it came from Fred.  I had a chance not too long ago to cheer him on when he won the award for Best School in the World!!!  So he knows what he’s talking about.

The largest message I learned from Fred is that the creator gave us two ears and one mouth.  So we should listen two times more than we speak.

It isn’t easy… because often enough you really hear something that sets you off or that you have an opinion about.  Doesn’t matter.  Just sit there and wait.  Wait until it is all done.  Look through their eyes.  Walk in their shoes.  See what they see and feel what they feel.  Understand where they are coming from and more importantly help them get there.  It is easy to point fingers… but it is a challenge to listen and even more to understand.

It is as world leader Winston Churchill once said, “Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen.”

Courage – Part Three

Change is scary!!!

It could be to try something new or make a change in your diet.  Either way to take action on something you want to do but you know is different can be a challenge.

By nature we are creatures of comfort.  We feel happy in our routine.

Think about every time you wake up.  You have probably got a set 5-10 things you do before you leave for work or school.  Now these things can change in order but if all or some of them are not there… you are one grumpy person.

We all have these types of routines or things that make us feel comfortable.  Often enough though the things that make us uncomfortable are the things that change us.  The things that make us grow.  Take for instance… the one thing I always dislike is sprints.  To run as fast as you can for a small distance.  Take a short break… and do it again.  Ugh!!!  It always hurts so bad… but the pay off is so great.  It always made me in better condition as well as better looking shape.

It was something out of my comfort zone like sprints that took me to my next level.

Right now at this moment you know what it will take.  Deep down you most likely have already thought of what you need to adjust to get yourself to your next level.  However the pain from stretching to reach it might start to hold you back from taking the first step.

So when that happens think of this quote… “To dare is to lose one’s footing momentarily. To not dare is to lose oneself.” by Soren Kierkegaard

Take that first step… and keep thinking about what that change will bring you.  If you are 100% happy with yourself, then just change things up a little bit.  Watch the progress that will happen when you do.

Whether you want big changes or small changes… If you show courage and dare to go to the next level then you will have done something even greater.  You will have also taken people you know and led them by example.  Help yourself by having courage to make the change and then mentor others so they can enjoy the benefits with you.

Courage – Part Two

Often enough fear is the thing that holds us back from doing what needs to be done.  It creates doubt in us.  This is a feeling that can really disrupt what we either must do or want to do.  Most often enough all we need to do is think logically about the situation and we can over come it.

I remember the first time I descended into Lake Travis for my Open Water Scuba Certification.  They said you wouldn’t be able to see bottom.  Literally there was just a rope going into nothing-ness.  That has freaked quite a few people out.  It definitely is scary your first or even tenth time in Lake Travis.  The most important thing I remember is something else they said though.  The rope is tied to a platform that sits at 25 feet.  So using logic… I looked at my depth gauge as I went down the rope.  I wasn’t concerned with what I couldn’t see anymore.  I just trusted my instructors and watched for when I got close to 25 feet.  Once I got to about 20 feet… I could see the platform and my fellow students on it.

“You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face.  You must do the thing which you think you cannot do.”  Eleanor Roosevelt

Tackling that first hurdle has enabled me to do so much more with diving.  It has also payed off in my Martial Arts training and other parts of my life.  I feel that moment was put in front of me to overcome.  It made me stronger and able to overcome other hurdles and potential  fears put in front of me.

Face it!!!

The old saying that knowledge is power is just that… execution… now that is POWER!!!

Courage – Part One

We have to have courage before, during and after any situation.  We need it before so that we can become more informed on subjects we participate in.  This may include learning, understanding and becoming better at things we will never be the best at.

We need these steps to feel competent with what we are doing.  This builds confidence which will help you make decisions and execute actions that need to be done.

Afterwards though, we need the courage to stand by our actions.  To be confident in the way we handled things from start to finish.

As with all things… it starts with a single notion or spark… an idea.

I want to become X or I want to do Y.  What is that idea you have had sitting on the back burner?  What is that new thing that you want to try??

As Charles Dubois said, “The important thing is this: To be able at any moment to sacrifice what we are for what we could become.”

The time is now.

“Step Up!!!” as Tony Robbins would say and live it, breath it… feel it.

Courage…
