Plan Your Work

architect-architecture-artist-268362
I was just talking with a student this week about how you can’t control time.  It is like water in a hand.  You can’t hold it and you can’t really control it; but… you can irrigate the flow of it.
I think one of the best sayings I learned was…
“Plan Your Work and Work Your Plan.”
I remember when I first heard this.  I mean it really rocked my world.  Immediately after I got back from the Martial Arts Super Show, I put this concept into action.
You see the real question isn’t what we have to do, it is when do we do it.
The easiest way to make this happen is to schedule each task like an appointment.  I mean you would have your private lesson, doctor’s appointment and family BBQ on your calendar right?  Why not add in the tasks of each day so you know when you are going to do them?
This kind of direction will take you from marking off a few things on your list, to knocking everything out.  It will also help you from trying to do too much in one day.  Best of all, it will allow you to be 100% present in everything you do.
Now you will not only crush your task list; but you will also do each task with the best quality ever.
Schedule yourself the time to knock this out today and watch how everything else falls into place.

Two Simple Concepts

Often, I am reminded of what my friend would say every time I asked him how he was doing…

“Hard Work and Clean Living.”

This would usually make me chuckle; but there is some serious power to what he said.  I mean if you put hard work into anything you usually get something out of it.  Best of all if you are living clean, you should have the energy, mental strength, drive and more to conquer your goals.

That honestly is how I feel now.  During these last 15 days, I have created more work for myself than ever before.  I have schedule it and already crushed some of the projects.  Proof is in the numbers and they are not always your weight, waist or biceps.  They are in the number of quality things you can accomplish in a given day.  This includes spending time with those you love and care about.

That being said I have a few more projects to conquer and once I do, the flood gates will be open for some amazing things to help you achieve more.  2018 by far isn’t over.  It is just getting revved back up!!!

Spring Board To Your Goals

After an amazing Testing Week and Fitness Training Camp it would be understandable to cool our jets and just chill.

If you were at the Camp, then you might remember this is called the Transition Phase.  It happens after any major event or goal and it is where you are typically a little physically and even mentally fatigued.

We might not realize it; but we experience this multiple times throughout our lives.

This phase in my opinion is extremely powerful because you have two choices.  You can easily choose to stall your momentum towards your next goal, or you can “spring board” and jump from one goal to the next.

Just think about this the next time you are contemplating a break.  When you catch yourself doing so, shake your head and jump up and down ten times.  Get your blood flowing and think about how great it felt to do something so amazing.

There are few things in life we can completely control.  Putting one foot in front of the other is as easy as just doing it.  Keep moving forward, keep progressing and keep CRUSHING those goals!!!

Two Hands

http://www.martialway.net

Recently I said, “Grab onto to your goal with two hands, focus on the finish line, and make it happen.”

I think this almost says it all when it comes to working towards your goals.

A great example is when you eat or drink with one hand and surf your phone with the other.  Are you really “Laser Beam Focused” on either task?

By grabbing onto your goal with two hands it gives you double the amount of focus.  It also helps you to be completely present in your actions.

Most importantly… it gets you to hang on when your goal takes off and it tells you when you need to push to get it moving.

Have you ever had to push a car or something heavy that rolls?

On an even surface, no problem at all.  Now once that surface tilts downhill you have to hang on so your object doesn’t run away from you right?  What about when the ground starts to tilt up?  Now you have to push harder to make it move and maybe even keep steady pressure so that it doesn’t roll back on YOU!!!

Try this concept in everything you do and watch what happens next!

Laban Laro Tournament

http://www.martialway.net

Wow what a weekend!!  We just got back from the 12th Annual MARS International Training Camp and it was amazing!  We had some of the best training sessions with top notch instructors.  We also had a chance to compete in the Laban Laro Tournament on Saturday afternoon.

We knew going into it that there might be less ladies to compete against Anne, Christina and Sadie.  So from the beginning we pushed hard to let them fight against the men.  In the end, they got every thing they wanted and more.  They fought two amazing ladies that showed up as well as each other.  Then they moved into the “Open” and “Masters” Division where they continued to push hard.  In the end they came home with some phenamenal placements that we are all very proud of.  More importantly, they came home with the respect from every single man in the room.

We took:
2nd, 3rd and 4th Women’s Sword
4th Masters Sword
3rd Masters Knife
1st and 2nd Women’s Knife!!!

Their performance shows the support of our community here at Martial Way Legacy.  This is where the training partner becomes a Teammate and the Teammate becomes FAMILY.

Thanks so much to all of you for being a part of our family and we hope to see you this week.

Laser Beam Focus

abstract-ai-art-373543

http://www.martialway.net

Recently I brought up how important the concept of making a list can be.  A great example is when you go to the grocery store without a list.  You can really get held up and if you combine hungry with it… well you know what that means.

I find the “cure” is to get laser beam focused on what my end goal is.

When it comes to our Costco visit, I even make a game out of it.  My goal is 10 minutes in and out and for $100 or less.  Now if you shop at Costco you know this is a true challenge; but it is possible.

I share this because you have to stay focused on what your goal is while you make your list.  Then take that focus and apply it while you execute it.

Your attention to the desired outcome will drive you to a whole new level.  It will fuel you through the distractions and even huge challenges that any day can give you.

Grab onto to your goal with two hands, focus on the finish line, and make it happen.

Absorb What Is Useful

etd1

http://www.martialway.net

“Absorb what is useful, discard what is not…” BRUCE LEE

This is a well used quote that gets a lot of traction everywhere.  It pops up in of course martial arts; but if you search more you will see it in many professions and studies.  That actually brings up my point.  Taking it a step further and searching for this is the PERFECT example.  Putting in enough time in anything you want to accomplish will make a difference.  This is the only thing that is missing in this quote and can be misleading at times.  You see, to truly understand quotes like these we need to see the context surrounding them.  It is like taking a “macro” photo of a beautiful flower.  The flower is in focus but the background is all blurry.  This arrangement doesn’t really give you any idea of details about the flower.  Where does it exist?  Is it wild or in someone’s yard?  This comes up in the movie Enter the Dragon where Bruce Lee tells his young student to not focus on just his finger.  If the student does, then he misses all that the finger points towards.

That takes me to the point my favorite English teacher in High School gave me.  I read a lot of Bruce Lee material back then.  He saw my drive, desire and passion in following Bruce Lee so he shared something really powerful with me.  He said, if you want to really improve then you need to stop following Bruce Lee.  I was like, “WHAT?”  The next sentence that came out of his mouth changed my world!  This saying or quote has been used by many philosophers throughout time…

Do not seek to follow in the footsteps of the wise; seek what they sought.” Basho

He said I should start looking at “why” Bruce Lee did what he did.  Discover his direction and motivation.  Then use that to fuel me towards my goals in everything.

You see very few things are great at face value.  Only when we scratch more than the surface do we find the true meaning and result.  If you don’t think so, then bite into an orange.  Not so tasty.  Now peel the orange.  Super juicy and yummy.

The Sky Is The Limit

agriculture-arid-bright-46160

http://www.martialway.net

I wanted to share something that we do several times a year to help us keep momentum going on our goals.

In my opinion, it is extremely important to create what I call a “Sky Is The Limit” List every three to six months.

So what goes on this list?

Anything and everything you want to do, see, create, and achieve.  Now you see why I say “Sky Is The Limit” right?

The best way I have found to do this is to turn off your phone and set a timer for five minutes.  During this time, write down everything that pops into your mind.  This could range from taking the trash out to living on an island.

Working this step is extremely important.  It keeps in mind the maintenance of your daily life while at the same time helps you start to put bigger dreams and goals on the table.  Besides, it is hard to effectively start executing a plan that has no steps.

Try this and see how it is easier to start thinking and achieving bigger things!

Is Your Plate Full?

appetizer-close-up-cuisine-434258

http://www.martialway.net

These last couple of weeks have been so quick!

We went from helping our friends complete “The World’s Toughest Canoe Race” to a Black Belt Testing Weekend and then, a summer vacation we planned for friends.

I am here to say it isn’t going to let up any time soon.  I bring this up because one of my students Leighton asked me if I was a “Plate Full” kinda guy.

Guess what my answer was?  Yep!

I love this perspective that he brought up.  Don’t get me wrong I like a little R&R in my hammock too; but I want to earn it.  The only way I feel that I have earned it is by setting goals and achieving them.  Often enough my goals like the three major events above are about where our friends, family and students want to be.  We’ve made an entire community and training facility about that.  No matter what is going on in the world, you can bet we are here to help you achieve more.

Here’s an example of what I mean on our calendar.

Don’t be afraid of being “Too Busy” and watch at how awesome it feels to get things done while helping others achieve their goals.

Just Show Up Mentality

adventure-daylight-freedom-1134190

http://www.martialway.net

What a day!  It’s felt great to get back in on a Monday and just tear through all my various training modules.  So far, I have even found the time to add a few new things to my list.

I bring up the word “list” very specifically because I think it is extremely important that you have a list.  You need to have something that you know you’re going to work on.

There is a little bit of discipline that it takes to get it started; but after you get the ball rolling… you are set!  In fact, once your list is created, the process gets extremely easy.  Review, update and hit it again tomorrow.

This process takes you away from the “Just Show Up Mentality”.  It puts you in the game and sets you up to crush your goals.

Try taking just a few moments to get the ball rolling and you will see what I mean.

Oh and remember, “Don’t Get Scared… Get Awesome!!!”

Rise to the occasion and just watch your successes stack up through even a week of practicing this.
